The Abbotts Take the Plunge at Carnes Crossroads

August 1st, 2016

Soon after Ryoko Abbott began teaching an Aqua Zumba class at the Carnes Crossroads’ pool, she was ready to dive in – not just into the water, but also the community. The Summerville resident started leading the class in May and within a couple of weeks, she and her husband, Jeremy, decided to make the newly emerging community their home.

Aqua Zumba may have given Ryoko her first glimpse of the neighborhood, but an invitation from a Carnes Crossroads staff member to attend the community’s annual Street Party at the Green Barn on May 24 helped seal the deal.

“I remember it was a Sunday,” said Jeremy, a Navy Chief who works as an instructor at the Naval Nuclear Training Facilities in Goose Creek. “And I had duty on Monday and I wasn’t really feeling like doing anything. I just wanted to stay at home and relax!”

But Ryoko wanted to go, “just for dreaming,” so Jeremy relented.

“She said, please,” he added with a smile. “So I said, OK, happy wife – happy life!”

Soon after they arrived, they learned the community was also hosting open houses on multiple properties. They decided to have a look.

“I took him to the sales office first and I just asked if we could look around,” recalled Ryoko. “We looked at the Edgemore first, a David Weekly home, and then 20 more!”

The Abbotts, who have been renting a friend’s townhouse in the area for the last five years, were not even in the market for a new home at the time. But they could feel their excitement beginning to grow at the chance to set down roots in a promising new, master planned community. They imagined how it would feel to have a yard of their own, room for family members to visit, beautiful outdoor spaces for recreation and community gatherings, and friendly, engaging neighbors.

“My biggest dream is to have a castle that is ours,” said Jeremy.

A week after the Street Party, they signed a contract on a David Weekly home. It is currently under construction and is set to be finished in April of 2017.

“It’s so exciting,” said Ryoko, a native of Japan whose only living experience in the United States has been in the Charleston region. “I’ve dreamed of living in a community like this, so it’s really nice!”

Ryoko is also looking forward to taking up gardening at her new home, utilizing the Green Barn’s fire pit for cook-outs, and maybe even starting a garage band.

“Some of the people in the community play music, too,” she said. “So we can play music together!”

“I’m more excited about getting the house the way I want it,” added Jeremy, who also sees a little wood-working in his future. “And having my man cave upstairs! That’s what I’m really excited about.”

The young couple, who enjoy taking part in regional sporting events like the Cooper River Bridge Run and Rugged Maniac competitions, also plan to hit the local walking and running trails as often as they can.

“I like the fact that they have a running trail going through the neighborhood,” said Jeremy. “That was something that was very key for me…We really like the community and the amenities it offers us. We just feel very welcomed here.”

For the Abbotts, the hardest part now is the wait, as they count down the days until their new home is completed. But both agree that since Ryoko’s first Aqua Zumba class at Carnes Crossroads, the process has gone swimmingly and they are thrilled they decided to take the plunge.
