Volvo Will Soon Be Our Neighbor

If you live in the Charleston area, you’ve certainly heard the news: Volvo is coming! The company announced in May that it would be building its first U.S. manufacturing plant in North Charleston, bringing 4,000 new jobs to the region.
The Volvo plant, which will soon be under construction, will be virtually in our back yard. One entrance to the property is just ten miles away, making Carnes Crossroads a convenient residential location for the thousands of people who will work there every day. But Volvo won’t be the only high-profile employer nearby.
Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz announced that it is expanding its North Charleston assembly plant and will soon begin manufacturing its Sprinter vans here, a move that will create 1,200 jobs at another north area location. The announcements from Volvo and Mercedes-Benz come just a few short years after Boeing’s arrival to Charleston, which brought at least 6,000 jobs to the region, along with various suppliers who followed Boeing and set up shop in the area. Several employees at Boeing and related manufacturing companies now call Carnes Crossroads home.
Our region’s economic base is becoming stronger and more diverse than ever before. In just a few short years Charleston has expanded from a coastal town largely reliant on the hospitality and tourism industry into a regional hub for some of the transportation industry’s global leaders – and Summerville and Carnes Crossroads are right in the heart of this growth! The new jobs, businesses, schools, amenities and other resources emerging in our area make Carnes Crossroads an exceptionally convenient and desirable place to call home!
