A Warm Welcome for the Brookings at Carnes Crossroads

April 25th, 2017

More than a hundred residents, elected officials and others from around the region came out to St. James Park on Saturday, April 22 to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony and welcome the Brooking family for the first time to Carnes Crossroads. The event officially commemorated the beginning of construction of a new mortgage-free home for U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jeremy Brooking and his family. Countless businesses, organizations and individuals throughout the community are pitching in to make sure this wounded U.S. Marine veteran and his family can get a fresh start and create a new life at Carnes Crossroads.

The Brookings received an extraordinary welcome at the groundbreaking event. Escorted into the community by the Patriot Guard Riders, the family of four followed U.S. flag-lined neighborhood streets to the site of the ceremony, where their future neighbors, members of the military and representatives from Operation Finally Home, Max Crosby Construction, the Daniel Island Company and Carnes Crossroads Real Estate waved flags and welcomed them with applause.

After the presentation of colors by the Patriot Guard Riders, students from Northwood Academy led the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem, and Executive Pastor Bradford Singleton of Northwood Church gave the invocation. Speakers from some of the project’s primary supporters – including Jamison Howard of Max Crosby Construction, Matt Sloan of the Daniel Island Company and retired Major General Gerald P. Minetti – spoke of the importance of the project and welcomed the family to what will soon be their new home.

The event ended with the team and the family – including the Brooking’s two young daughters – performing the ceremonial “turning of the shovels” to officially mark the beginning of construction.

Jeremy was wounded ten years ago while serving in Iraq. He has had a long road to recovery, but received life-changing news earlier this year when he was surprised with the announcement that he had been chosen to receive a new home through Operation Finally Home at Carnes Crossroads. Operation Finally Home partners with corporate sponsors, builders, developers, individual contributors and volunteers to help America’s military heroes and their families transition to the home front by addressing one of their most pressing needs—a home to call their own. Jamison Howard of Max Crosby Construction, which has been building homes on Daniel Island for two decades, is taking the lead on soliciting donations and is building the Brookings’ home at Carnes Crossroads.
